Dear Readers,
When my friend Tasha called me who works at Cypress Assisted Living here in Jefferson, Texas and asked me if I would come and be a celebrity reader, I jumped at the chance to read aloud to the residents. You see, I just finished our 10th Anniversary Girlfriend Weekend, our Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guy Book Club Convention, and I want to be the leader that not only preaches the "good word" but lives the "good word" too. This year it's all about paying it forward and doing good works all in the name of literacy.
What lovely ladies came to this reading as you can see in the photos. And since I am the #1 Pat Conroy fan, I read the first the last chapter of my book entitled Miss International, my homeage to one of my favorite writers. Inspired by Pat Conroy and his daughter, Melissa Conroy's panel at the convention, I brought my signed Poppy and Penelope dolls handmade by Melissa dolls to share her story too, the children's book "Poppy's Pants". The residents followed along as I storytold the picture book and then I let them hold the dolls. As you can see from their smiling faces, they thoroughly enjoyed the storytime.
Looks like I will be going back as invited back again to read to the splendid listeners! Won't you think about reading aloud at one of your local nursing homes or asssisted living facilities. Only good things can come from reading and as I told the good ladies, it's all about the story. I encouraged them to tell their stories and perhaps, write them down, or get someone to record or write them for them. As I always say, a story untold is a library lost to your family and friends and who better can tell that story in your own words than YOU!
Make your New Year's Resolution to read aloud this year, whether to the young or those young at heart. It put a smile on my face and it will yours too!
More tomorrow on more WINNERS from Girlfriend Weekend so let's all put on our thinking caps and brainstorm on what we can do to promote literacy this year!
There's no place like books, there's no place like books!

P.S. My daughters were so inspired by Girlfriend Weekend that they have been on a reading fest from Pat Conroy's 'South of Broad" to the graphic novel "Stitches" by David Small! I may not have been able to teach them to keep their rooms clean but one thing is for sure, they are voracious readers! Woo Hoo as the late, great Doug Marlette would have said, WOO HOO!

Kathy,
I was just sharing with a group today about a similar program in Williamson County. Then we went for lunch and coffee and I whipped out the laptop to show off the Pulpwood Queen event pics - and found this beautiful post. Way to Go! You are a our hero.
