Keynote Speaker and Author, Kelly Corrigan of The Middle Place. The Middle Place has been chosen as a finalist in the First Book category in the Books for a Better Life Awards. The awards will be announced at an event on February 23rd, 2009 at 6 p.m. in NYC at the Millennium Hotel. The Middle Place has been chosen as a Booksense pick for January. Booksense is the largest association of independent booksellers in the US.
The Middle Place was profiled in O, The Oprah Winfrey Magazine's January issue. The Doug Marlette Award presented by Kathleen Parker of The Washington Post to recipient Fred McKenzie for a lifetime of promoting literacy. As 90 year author, historian, genealogist, and Timber Guy Fred McKenzie passed away on New Year’s Day, (due to complications after surgery); his family will be in attendance to accept the award on his behalf. 8:00 p.m. The Pulpwood Queens host THE GREAT BIG BALL OF HAIR BALL with Masters of Ceremonies Bill Smith and Andy Looney of the Bull Durham Playhouse Players. Special entertainment to open the BALL by Timber Guys, Richard Penner, Bill Smith, Greg Ashley, Jay Patrick, and Pulpwood Queen Karen Penner! LIVE FROM GIRLFRIEND WEEKEND, IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT! The GREAT BIG BALL OF HAIR BALL will feature BORDERLINE, a classic rock band that has been playing together for over 9 years. They cover songs that are heartfelt and are enjoyed by many people. Such classic artist as Bob Seger, Lynard Skynard, Eagles, Wild Cherry, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown band, Gary Moore and the list goes on as well as originals. Their live performance is electrifying and has to be seen to believe. The Pulpwood Queens of Katy, Texas will be decorating for this event and The Pulpwood Queens of East Texas will be hosting providing refreshments and appetizers. B.Y.O.B. Set ups plus ice provided. Dress for all events: Pulpwood Queens, Timber Guys, and Attendees! It's your time to shine and show off your clubs individuality. For all those who have purchased packets, you will receive an Official 2009 Girlfriend Weekend T-shirt with original art by Big Time Illustrator Tim Raglin. (Be sure to let me know your sizes for your chapter’s a.s.a.p.) Wear those shirts proudly and don’t forget your mandatory tiaras! We want to show everybody that we are the book club that has Big Time FUN all the while promoting literacy. For the Saturday night GREAT BIG BALL OF HAIR BALL, no holds barred. Bring it on with the theme Black and White and READ All Over! Tables will be reserved for chapters but make your table too your own! We will have it basically covered with newsprint so the best decorated table gets FREE COMPLIMENTARY PASSES to the Ball next year! BRING IT ON! No costume is too over the top except don't wear anything you couldn't show to your pastor at church, ha ha ha! That means clothing is mandatory!
We will have a contest at the Ball for BEST GIRL GROUP following our theme of Black and White and READ All Over, a contest for MS. GREAT BIG BALL OF HAIR BALL!, and TIMBER GUYS OF THE YEAR! Several other NEW Prizes will be awarded too so know that the more you participate in all we do to promote literacy and get the world reading, the more you qualify to WIN, WIN, WIN!
