Singularity by Kathyn Casey is our Pulpwood Queen Bonus Book Club Selection!

Dear Pulpwood Queens and Beauty and the Booklovers:

Several chapters have decided to read this month our Pulpwood Queen Bonus Book Club Selection, Singularity by Kathryn because Ron Rash's book, Serena, has been delayed in releasing.
Because your chapter may have chosen that book instead, below are the book club discussion questions for Singularity.
Tiara wearing and Book sharing,
Kathy L. Patrick
The Pulpwood Queen
Suggested Book Club Discussion Questions for SINGULARITY

1) What is it about law enforcement that drew Sarah to a career as a Texas Ranger? How do you view her initial contribution as a profiler to the Lucas investigation?

2) Do you think it’s difficult for women in law enforcement? Is it still a man’s world? Is this unique to law enforcement or are women still treated differently in the workplace?

3) In Sarah’s world there are turf wars between agencies, from the local police departments to the rangers to the FBI. Is that unusual, or do you see examples of it in your everyday life?

4) Sarah is still grieving for her husband and appears ill equipped to handle Maggie’s pain. When, if ever, does that change? How could Sarah have reacted or what could she have done that might have made a difference for her daughter?

5) Murder investigations today are a combination of forensics and old-fashioned police work. In the Lucas case, what plays the most important role? Or are both facets equally important?

6) How do you view the relationship between Sarah and David? Is it one of convenience/opportunity or do you believe it has possibilities for the future?

7) Does Sarah do the right thing when she follows her conscience and goes public? What would you have done?

8) Do you believe evil exists in the world? What do you see as the primary factors that turn individuals into monsters like the killer in the book?

9) Does Sarah set into motion the events at the end of the book? Should she have seen them coming? Could she have prevented Maggie’s and Nora’s involvements?

10) At the end of the book, Sarah is momentarily reluctant to pull the trigger with her daughter watching. Is this a sign of weakness or something else?

The Pulpwood Queens Introduce the Lunar Ladies Literary Society Book Club!

Dear Readers,

This photo and message below just in from Debbie Nini!

Kathy,
I promised you a picture of the Lunar Ladies Literary Society Book Club. We had such a good time reading and discussing your book. Of course, we also enjoyed a few of your book club recipes.
It was so nice of you to call in and join the meeting. There were a few that could not come and they were truly sorry to have missed the experience. When we met again, members continued to talk about how much they enjoyed the evening.
Thank you for being such an advocate of literacy.

Debbie Nini
Lunar Ladies Literary Society
Also in today's news: Mary Lou James just emailed me the Book Chatters are coming by for a visit this Wednesday after I return from my Rotary lunch meeting, say 1:30 p.m. Pulpwood Queens of East Texas, come by to meet this traveling book club!
And get this message I just received from one of the wonderful women I met at the West Texas Book Festival this past weekend!
Kathy:

I bought your book today in Abilene at the West Texas Book Festival. My husband and I also briefly shared a table with you at the luncheon before they moved you to a classier table. After shopping, we went home and I opened your book. Well, I had hardly read the first page before my jaw dropped to the floor. _You_ grew up in Eureka, Kansas! _I_ grew up in Eureka, Kansas! Of course, it was 30 years before you, but still I bet we were the only two Eurekans in the room today. Also, interestingly, I grew up to become a librarian and you grew up to own a bookstore. Who says there's no culture in Kansas? I haven't been back to Eureka in many years. Does the old Carnegie Library still exist? I spent many happy hours there as a kid. We moved away when I was a sophomore in high school, but I still think of it as my "hometown." Anyway the book is great fun and I'm enjoying it.

Best of luck,

Shay Bennett

The Pulpwood Queen speaks at the West Texas Book Festival!

Dear Readers,
I just returned from the West Texas Book Festival and can hardly wait to share the photos. I had the most amazing time and to say I was truly embraced by all the folks in Abilene, would be an extreme understatement.
The first photos were as we arrived at our hotel. Check out The Ten Commandments in the atrium. Madeleine, my 14 year old daughter came with me and loved our accommodations. I am telling you the MCM Elegante had the most amazing cloud of a bed. As you can see Madeleine had to check it all out!
We had a wonderful author reception at a local art gallery. Caught up with my some old friends and co-authors on my panel that was to be the final day, Jeffrey McClanahan and Jodi Thomas. Met Glenn Dromgoole and his lovely wife who invited me in the first place. Big hugs all around. I am telling you West Texas people are real warm and friendly. I felt right at home.
Saturday, Madeleine and I arrived at the Abilene Civic Center just in time for our author panel, with Jodi Thomas, and the Dixie Cash sisters, Jeffrey McClanahan and Pam Cumbie. We had a wonderful reception and I think I learned more about my Pulpwood Queen author friends than anybody. I invited the girls to come on to join us at Girlfriend Weekend so keep your fingers crossed. We then had a fantabulous lunch and I never thought anybody could beat Riverport BBQ in Jefferson, but the barbecue lunch was dee-vine! I was seated with some wonderful teachers whose table was sponsored by the local bank. You'll see the girls as hopefully they will all be coming to Girlfriend Weekend too, January 15 - 17, 2009.
At the luncheon each of the paneled authors was featured and I was right after Elmer Kelton. I about died to think I shared the same microphone. You see when I first moved to Texas, I learned pretty quick that I needed to take a Texas History course. Lucky for me that was with the author and professor extraordinaire, Bill O'Neal at Panola College. Bill is the one who suggested we read anything by Elmer Kelton and I was hooked for good. I read everything I could get my hands on so to follow him in the introductions was a highlight for me.
Later, all the authors featured had book signings and I met some pretty incredible West Texas women (Check out the woman in the peacock blue outfit complete with boots), and some men that bring the world "perfect gentlemen" to mind. I love the West!
After the throngs cleared, I quickly ran over to the Texas Star Trading Company's book booth, (owned by the Dromgoole's), and stacked up all the authors books to get signed. To meet old friends, Mike Cox, Jodi Thomas, Pam and Jeffrey, and new author friends, Joaquin Jackson, Don Graham, (who gave one hell of a speech as he accepted the A.C. Greene Award), and Elmer Kelton made me hope and pray I get invited back again and again.
All I have got to say is God Bless Texas and God Bless the West Texas Book Festival. They have recharged my energy on my mission to promote literacy and I believe we will have if not one, maybe several Pulpwood Queen Book Club chapters in the future from a part of state that reminds me how much I miss the sky!
I could write on and on about my visit to Abilene but stopped at my daughter's college apartment in Tyler on the way home to spend the night and now doing her hair, so it's time to rinse the color.
More tomorrow, so thank you again to Glenn Dromgoole, the Abilene Public Library Staff, The Friends of the Abilene Library, and all the wonderful folks at The West Texas Book Festival. You all would be doing yourself a great service by attending next year. These folks know how to put on a festival and have the time of your life while they are at it!

Award Winning Appalachian Author Releases New Novel
SERENA
by Ron Rash

ATLANTA, GA: Promoted as the number one book title for 2008, SERENA, the fourth novel by O’Henry prize recipient and 2007 PEN/Faulkner finalist, Ron Rash, is scheduled for release October 7, 2008 from Harper Collins Publications. Rash continues to cultivate a lush resume of Appalachian tales with this a gothic story of greed, corruption and revenge set against the backdrop of the 1930s North Carolina wilderness and America's burgeoning environmentalist movement. Described as an Appalachian retelling of Macbeth, SERENA portrays the story of newlyweds, George and Serena Pemberton’s arrival in the North Carolina Mountains from Boston to create a far-reaching timber empire, vowing nothing will deter them from such success. Serena Pemberton’s steady assault upon every obstacle to the expansion of their kingdom memorably assures the plight of Teddy Roosevelt’s environmental movement.

“Ron Rash’s new novel SERENA catapults him to the front ranks of the best American novelists. This novel will make a wonderful movie, and the brave actress who plays Serena is a shoe-in for an Academy Award nomination.”
- Pat Conroy

“The opening is unforgettable…the last hundred pages are thrilling.should be a breakthrough for this masterful storyteller.”
- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Rash’s previous three novels—One Foot in Eden, Saints at the River, and The World Made Straight—have garnered outstanding critical praise and an abundance of awards including the Appalachian Book of the Year, and the Fiction Book of the Year from both the Southern Book Critics Circle and SEBA. Drawing on the landscape of his Carolina youth, Rash has established himself as a significant writer of southern fiction.

For information regarding interviews and appearances with Ron Rash contact Kathie Bennett at Magic Time Literary Agency at (864) 706-1484 or kathiecbennett@hotmail.com.

Dear Readers,
Now if you read yesterday's post you already know that I did my wild child Amie and her boyfriend, Kevin's hair. (See previous blog). I have found the best advertisement for my Hair Salon/Book Store is word of mouth. Today Amie's friend, Rachael, came in for a new do as she loved Amie's new look so much she just had to try something new herself. Now before you panic thinking I only do punk hair, check out the styles I will post during the month of October from Beauty and the Book!
You all know I love books but I love doing hair too so I thought it was high time you got to see some of the styles that leave my shop. Stay tuned and get ready to see some great new fall styles and color! My speciality is color and cuts as I would love to create a new look just for YOU!

Beauty and the Book gets ready for Halloween!

Dear Readers,
I totally get into decorating for Halloween. This year spurned me to go for an Alfred Hitchcock theme!
I was minding my own business and on a mission to find a ball at Wal-mart for my daughter's skit as the Bulldog mascot for Jefferson High's Pep Rally when something caught my eye. I could not believe it! There on the Barbie aisle was an Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS Barbie of Tippi Hendren complete with birds pecking at her head! I screamed with delight!
You see my very first book every signed by an author in person was "Cats of Shambala" by Tippi Hendren. She even drew little birds above her name. Since I loved THE BIRDS as a child and since Tippi Hendren had become a champion for refuge for the big cats, I just had to have that Barbie!
Now this is a work in progress as I am adding Halloween stuff everyday. Besides, Jefferson is featured in the October issue of Texas Highways on being a great place to go with the family in search of ghostly spirits. I have a bunch of books on the ghost stories of Jefferson to prove just that, so what are you waiting for, come to Jefferson this fall!
It also so happened that two of favorite clients who are also a couple came in today for new do's! Amy and Kevin are my wild childs and do I love to do their hair! I hope you enjoy their photos in my shop and they are sporting two NEW Chi products which I think are to die for, sorry for the pun. One is a NEW Chi flat iron that somes in it's own coffin purse, quite the Halloween fashion statement, don't you think! The other is for your travels, a complete Chi travel kit that has airline regulation size Chi products, a travel flat iron and blow dryer! I'm planning on taking the later with me as I travel to the West Texas Book Festival this weekend in Abilene!
So enjoy the photos and will be posting more do's and shop decor as the month progresses. On Halloween do take note that I will be in Austin at the Texas Book Festival so all the more reason to have that Chi Travel kit and carrying case!
Happy Halloweinie!
