Dear Readers,
Queen Kay Huck of our Southwest Louisiana chapter has sent not only schedule of author events for Ron Hall and Denver Moore, but book club discussion questions too. I have the feeling she has stepped into my shoes and started running, ha ha ha! Out of breath keeping up with this literacy promoting go-getter but thrilled beyond words. She has fully embraced the Pulpwood Queen Book Club Experience. Check it all out below!

Hello Ladies,
We had such a great time reading this book and listening to the two men enlighten us. We decided that we would like to try and hear Denver's slow drawl and Ron's witty humor in person (and of course, I did offer the Southwest Louisiana Pulpwood Queens to be their dates the night we go…). Please respond if you would like to attend their speaking engagement and which one. Once I know who, when, and where, we can start looking at Hotels and other things we could do during the trip. You can see the entire schedule and many other great items at their website: file://www.samekindofdifferentasme.com/ (including reading our own Barbara's comment!).

Here is the Discussion Guide for the Same Kind of Different As Me. We have an author call-in scheduled with Ron Hall and hopefully Denver Moore. The Event Site also has the Discussion Guide is you wish to comment online.
Denver lived for decades as a virtual slave in Louisiana and a homeless drifter in Texas, until he met Deborah. But her art dealer husband, Ron, is more comfortable around millionaires than the destitute. So when Deborah is diagnosed with cancer, will Ron embrace her dream of rescuing Denver? Or will Denver save Ron?

Discussion Questions for Same Kind of Different As Me

Prejudice
What are some modern examples of prejudice? Other than racial prejudice, what other kinds of prejudice are common today?
What are three things you can do to combat your personal prejudices?
What does being prejudice say about your personal self-esteem?
Homelessness
What is your initial reaction to encountering a homeless person or someone who is in serious financial or personal need?
If you were in that situation, how would you want others to respond to you?
Other than give money to social service agencies, what are three things you can do to provide ministry to the homeless people in your community?
Sickness and Suffering
Bad things happen to good people. What might God be trying to reveal about Himself through these types of situations?
Recognizing our mortality puts life in perspective. What are three things for which you want to be remembered? What are you doing to accomplish these goals today?
Forgiveness
Is it harder to give or to receive forgiveness? Why?
Why is it so hard for us to grant unconditional forgiveness? How can your faith help you become a more forgiving person?
What is the role of forgiveness in your personal life? In your spiritual life?
Faith
In chapter 44, Denver said, "Our limitation is God's opportunity." How has this statement been authenticated in your life?
Throughout the book, Denver's initial response to life's challenges often was rooted in his simple faith in God. Why is it so hard for society’s successful people to have this kind of faith? What keeps you from having this kind of faith?
With Deborah in critical condition, the object of ministry (Denver) became the source of ministry. Denver had been through a lot and was equipped to provide for Ron’s needs. Through what experiences has God worked to equip you for ministry? How has God used you to meet the needs of others?
Deborah extended the reach of her ministry by investing in the lives of others. How are you investing in the lives of others?
The memorial service for Deborah was a celebration. How can such a somber occasion be celebratory? What does this say about the faith of the one who passed away?

Quotation of the Day
Michael Rosen: 'Give Children Books, Not SATs'

"One of the things I would do is put the enjoyment and pleasure in books
of all kinds right at the centre. You would get teachers sitting round
saying, 'Look, here is this massive historical body of books going back
3,000 years, full of stories and knowledge. How can we make the grabbing
hold of that stuff absolutely central?' It's not through drawing up a
specific curriculum. It's through the teachers working out, with
advisers and researchers, how to do that. We've lost the ability to put
those processes in place. What we think we have to do is produce
directives from central government."--Michael Rosen, the U.K.'s

Also we welcome special musical guest artist, Terry Dorgan, who is a local boy that when he performs if you keep your eyes closed, would make you swear Willie was here himself.

The book release couldn’t be better as Willie Nelson is celebrating his 75th year and what a better celebration than a picnic!
Joe Nick Patoski has written what appears to be the definitive biography of a country music great in WILLIE NELSON.
Publishers Weekly
For a guy who isn't me, Joe Nick Patoski can really write. Willie Nelson: An Epic Life is heartbreaking enough to have been ghostwritten by Hank Williams. It may be the best book ever written about the life of Texas's greatest gift to the world.

Suzanne Russell and I recently met at Lemuria Books(at the book signing of Kathy Patrick's book...see below...)and the inspiration for this club began... You can read more about the club and Kathy by clicking on the link below.http://beautyandthebook.com/pulpwood.htmA Lifetime Membership is only $25.While Kathy started the clubs for fun and friendship, her goal is to promote literacy. There are several (optional) author events throughout the year, such as Girlfriend Weekend in Jefferson, TX, that is SOOO much fun (I've been going as a member-at-large for the past four years!) It's a lot of fun to get to meet some of the authors and talk about their books. And Jefferson is a really cool little town in East Texas (about 4 hour drive). You will be amazed at the authors who take the time to come to this event in this small town...they LOVE it!The first book will be Kathy's own book: The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara-Wearing, Book-Sharing Guide to Life, the official book of the Pulpwood Queens—“where tiaras are mandatory and reading good books are the rule!”—celebrates the transformative power of reading and is a resource for book clubs and book lovers everywhere. We will have a discussion of the book at this first meeting. It is available at Lemuria. After that, we will decide together about the book selections from current and past Pulpwood Queen selections. (Lemuria will keep up with our selections and keep them in stock). This will be a fun, casual group. All that's required is reading one book per month and coming to discuss it. New friendships can be formed, too. It will be a great way to meet other women around the area, get out of the house on a Monday evening (once a month), have a glass of wine (optional??) and enjoy the power of books! So, let me know and mark it on your calendar.Lemuria has the book and we have less than a m onth...Let's have some fun! ***Oh, and bring a friend along!***Jonni R. The Pulpwood Queen has a NEW Mission!

The Pulpwood Queen Has a NEW Mission!

Writing my first book was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. First, because it was my story of my life in books, that made it highly personal, and second, because I had to do it while working full time and being a wife and mother.

What to tell, what not to tell. I battled for six years, internally, always with the thought in mind that everything I said would have consequences. This was to be my new baby. And when my baby was born I knew that my life would never be the same as it had when I had my first two children. What I went through pushed me to the limits on what I thought I could bear, but the pain and suffering I went through the birth process of my book made me forget everything when I received my first printed copy.

What joy! My story was to be told and to me it was beautiful. When the book was published I turned my book over to God. God is love and he would guide me through my publishing angst days ahead. What I did not know is that God had a bigger plan for me than declaring my life not only a reading life, but a writing life. One that has left me with this feeling of wonder and anticipation, much as the delight of sitting down with a new book that I have waited with bated breath to read. Oh, the joy of opening a new book to the first page. Yes, besides reading and writing AND promoting literacy, a new page has opened for me in life and one that involves a new mission. They call it Newgate.

Books have taken me many wondrous places. But one book in particular took me to a fundraiser for Newgate Mission, a mission whose sole purpose is to help people get back on their feet with a Christian foundation. Someone gave me the book “Same Kind of Different as Me” by Ron Hall and Denver Moore when I was on book tour. “You have to read this book, Kathy!” How many times had I heard this before but I always listen as the best books I have ever read have been presented to me by that word of mouth.

I missed church over this book. I began to read it after work on Saturday and woke Sunday early to finish the book. It was soon time for church but I was lost in the story. So lost, tears streamed down my face as I finished the last page. I had to write the author immediately and I did, via email. Ron Hall called me personally right back and we began a conversation.I felt really bad missing church. I explained to my minister, Allison and gave her the book to read. She grabbed my arm after reading the book and told me she would have missed church too.

The book is just that good. What I did not know would happen would be that soon I would travel with my daughters in tow to Longview, Texas to hear Ron Hall and Denver Moore speak about their book as a fundraiser for Newgate Mission. I believe over 2,000 people flooded into the doors of T.J. Field to hear the authors speak. It was standing room only and at the last minute the organizers added a front row and led us standing in the back to sit right in front of the podium. I met there some of my other Pulpwood Queen Book Club members who had brought their families. To read a book is one thing, but to have an author or authors speak of their book is another. This brings their story entirely into focus. I have never been so moved. You just have to read the book.

Afterwards, I spoke to Ron and Denver and leaving I noticed volunteers standing to each side behind tables of displayed information brochures on Newgate. I have to admit I had never heard of the mission before that evening. I paused as a young woman asked me if I would be interested in volunteering to help at the mission. Funny, I stopped and asked what kind of help did they need? That conversation has now led me to leading a life writing class at Newgate Mission.

I go once a month to the mission and I can tell you my life will never, ever be the same.Yesterday was just the third time I have gone to Newgate. As I write, I sit in disbelief at what happened at yesterday’s visit. I had both my daughters, age 14 and 18 in tow. I firmly believe that you want to teach your children what is important in life, you show them. Actions do speak louder than words.

We arrived to find a wooden cross propped against the outside door that was covered with hand written messages and stuffed animals. We entered and anxiously could not wait to introduce the girls to the incredible men and women who come to the mission for my class. My youngest had come with me the last time and she had begged me to bring her again. She too had experienced the same joy I had from getting to know these people. That time 19 men and one woman had showed up for the class. We even took photos at the end that were posted last month on my blogsite, www.pulpwoodqueen.com.

This time only five were in attendance but the stories began to unfold. A man after the class stopped me to show what he had written. He had begun his life story and then he told me why he had to tell his story. What he told me will be the story that I will never forget for the rest of my life. I can still see his eyes; the pain, the want and the need to have someone hear his story. He told me that from the first time he heard me speak, he knew that I was someone he could trust. I have never been given such a better gift.

What I did not understand as I volunteered to come to the mission once a month to lead this class would be what I would receive. I thought of this venture as one where I would be giving the giving. As the girls and I left I was filled with such a sense of what a gift this class was going to be for my life that I was blind sighted by what I learned next. Remember, the cross by the door as we entered the mission? I asked the minister in charge, Kent, what the cross was all about as we exited the building. He told me that a woman had been shot and murdered there the night before. She had been sleeping on a bench by the back door. Can you imagine?

My daughters and I stared in shock. Who knew such a world existed. We know now.As I write this column my oldest daughter, called out to me that Newgate Mission was on the news about the murder. Our eyes have been opened wide. I always knew that reading could take me places I never dreamed but to learn that reading could also lead me to a higher purpose? Yes, it can, it can indeed. What a wonderful world it would be if everyone would read voraciously. What roads reading may take us, what journeys, what joys!

May reading lead all of you to a higher purpose too. I assure you my life has been blessed from being a reader. Now let my actions speak louder than those words.

Dear Readers,

A NEW magazine is coming out called TEXAS and I am being featured on their website! Do note in the feature that I have NOT done Don Henley's hair. On the other hand I would welcome him to my shop at anytime to do just that, big fan my friends, big fan!

Everything else in the article is correct, (see below) and I have also included the teaser and link to feature on Joe Nick Patoski that will be here the second Tuesday in September for his latest book, "WILLIE NELSON: An Epic Life". Please contact me immediately to reserve your copy for the event at 903-665-7520 or email me at kathy@beautyandthebook.com. The Pulpwood Queen Cries Like a River!

Dear Readers,

Yes, I cried like a river when I read Charles Martin's latest "Where the River Ends". Since Charles is a Pulpwood Queen favorite author, I wanted to do something really special to commemorate his returning to the Pulpwood Queen fold and to honor his latest book. We would take a ride down the river or at least on our own Big Cypress Bayou that runs through my hometown of historic Jefferson Texas. I sent the word out to the Queens and the boat ride SOLD OUT with chapter members coming from Tyler, Marshall, Linden, and Jefferson, Texas AND Shreveport, Louisiana.

August 12, 6:00 p.m. "Rolling on the River" author event with Charles Martin of "Where the River Ends", Random House hosted by The Pulpwood Queens Book Clubs at The Turning Basin boat landing off Old Karnack Highway on Big Cypress Bayou in historic Jefferson, Texas. For tickets to this event, please contact: kathy@beautyandthebook.com or call 903-665-7520

Video Interview »

Now I pride myself on helping undiscovered authors get discovered in a big way. We have watched Charles since the beginning as a writer and truly believe that "Where the River Ends" will finally take him to a place with a national audience. The boat ride was to be our victory launch for all Charles hard work and paying his writing dues. Then it began to rain, not quite forty days and nights but it has been raining on and off for a few days. I woke up to hear it raining pretty hard. Reminded me of the hurricane part of Charles book of which you must read but you better have a Kleenix box nearby. It's one book where you can do some major sobbing in a good way. In fact, his publisher sent me a whole basket load of tissue packets artistically printed with the old adage, "cry me a river" and the cover of his book. I plan on handing them out to all who attend the book event tonight with Charles and as an added bonus, his wife Christy will also be in attendance.

Will we take the boat ride? That is the burning question and one that will only be answered at 6:00 p.m. tonight. So if you are attending the event tonight, please go to the Turning Basin right over the Big Cypress Bridge to the boat ramp. If my Inferno Red Pacific is NOT in that parking lot and the landing seems awfully quiet, please turn around and head back down Polk Street to my shop, Beauty and the Book, 608 North Polk, as the event will be their in case of inclement weather. My cell phone is 903-445-2353 but at this time I can't tell you in which place it will be. So see you tonight in Jefferson at one or the other places.

The Pulpwood Queens will be serving tonight dessert only as we are making homemade ice cream and Auntie Bev is bringing me a birthday cake! Yes, the BIG 52 is approaching rapidly and as always, I would rather celebrate this occasion with my book club members who truly understand what turning 52 actually means. CELEBRATION!

Joe Nick PatoskiP.S. For next months Pulpwood Queen Book Club meeting, help celebrate Willie Nelson's 75 birthday with Joe Nick Patoski, author of "Willie Nelson: An Epic Life", September 9, 2008. This is one of most fascinating biographies I have ever read and also must mention, it really too is an insider's guide to Texas music. Some of the conversation is this book is laugh out loud funny, highly entertaining and very enlightening. Who ever knew that Willie Nelson went to Baylor University? Read this book and you will find out many, many things about Willie that you did not know and practically everything there is to know about him and the Texas Music scene.
We meet the second Tuesday of each month so let me know if you will be coming and if you want to pre-order your copy of the book. I am sure I will run out unless I know for sure how many to be sure an order. Again, call 903-665-7520 and we accept all major credit cards. So for now, keep your fingers crossed, on the boat again, ha ha ha!

WHERE THE RIVER ENDS

By Charles Martin

In the tradition of Nicholas Sparks, Charles Martin makes his mainstream debut with a heart-tugging novel about one man's unshakeable love for his dying wife. WHERE THE RIVER ENDS (Broadway Books; on-sale July 15, 2008; Hardcover; 978-0-7679-2698-0) by Charles Martin chronicles a love-filled, tragedy-tinged journey and a bond that transcends all.

They're an unlikely pair: Doss Michaels grew up in a trailer park in southern Georgia and works as a fishing guide and part-time artist in Charleston; Charleston native and current supermodel Abbie Coleman is the only child of the senior senator from South Carolina. For her family, it was not a match made in heaven.

After a decade of happy marriage, Abbie discovers a lump in her breast. That leads to four years of non-stop medical treatments, toxic drugs, and unending nausea--in short, the end of life as Doss and Abbie knew it.

When even her doctors throw in the towel, Doss still refuses to give up. But rather than let his wife waste away at home in the care of hired strangers, Doss packs their bags and slips out with Abbie in the middle of the night. Together they start a 130-mile river trip down the St. Mary's River--fulfilling a promise Doss had made to Abbie years ago.

To spur Abbie to finish the trip, Doss brings along her wish list--10 things she hoped to accomplish in life. There is nothing extraordinary on the list. No Mount Everest climbs, no ultra-marathons, no tours of remote corners of the globe. The wishes are simple, which is exactly the point. Because after all the hospital visits and excruciating treatments, 'normal' is a fleeting memory. Doss and Abbie want nothing better than to steal back some time together.

-over-

While the Senator searches to find his daughter--along with most every major news network and law enforcement agency in the South, Doss makes a somewhat heroic push for the river's end. He encounters two problems: the river has a mind of its own and Doss has a secret he has not shared, not even with Abbie.

Charles Martin has written a powerfully emotional and beautiful story of heartbreaking loss and undying love.
