Today's Updates from The Pulpwood Queen!

Dear Readers,

Here is some more fan mail and do I love this book club's name and meeting time!

Kathy,
I'm a member of a small book club called "The Lunar Ladies Literary Society". Of course, we meet on the night of a full moon, hence the name.
This month we missed the full moon because one member, who has never missed a meeting, was out of town. We rescheduled for Tuesday, July 29th. And guess what????? Your book, The Pulpwood Queens'.." is our book of the month.
I plan to prepare a few of your recipes, including a jug of Marla-ritas (my sister and fellow book club member's name is Marla, she got a big kick out of that). We are looking forward to some great discussion and a good time.
If you have any words of wisdom, discussion questions, or remarks in general, please pass them along and I will share with the group.
Thanks so much,
Debbie Nini

And a message from Pulpwood Queen Book Club Selection author, Rosemary Poole-Carter:

Dear Kathy,

I hope you are having a great summer reading, writing, and teasing hair.

Below is an event at Murder by the Book that may be of interest to the Pulpwood Queens in the Houston area. Would you please pass the word on to them? Also, members are welcome to contact me at my e-mail or at 281-955-9042.

Many thanks,
Rosemary

Karen Harrington
Rosemary Poole-Carter

This event will be a Discussion of Women and Madness with psychiatric expert Dr. Debra Osterman and author Karen Harrington, whose new novel, Janeology (Kunati; $24.95), deals with the aftermath of a mother's murdering of her child.

The panel will be moderated by acclaimed novelist Rosemary Poole-Carter, whose recent release, Women of Magdalene, explores the mistreatment, misogyny and racism of patients at a women’s mental asylum just after the Civil War.

Karen Harrington will sign & discuss her debut novel, Janeology ($24.95). Tom Nelson is struggling after the death of his son at the hands of his wife Jane. While Jane sits in a Texas mental hospital for her part in the crime, prosecutors turn their focus to Tom. They believe Tom should have known Jane was on the cusp of a breakdown and protected his children from her illness. As a result, he is charged with “failure to protect.” Enter attorney, Dave Frontella, who employs a radical defense strategy – one that lays the blame at the feet of Jane’s nature and nurture. To gather evidence about Jane’s forbears, Frontella hires a woman with the power of retrocognition – the ability to use a person’s belongings to re-create their past. An unforgettable journey through the troubled minds and souls of Jane's ancestors, spanning decades and continents, this debut novel deftly illustrates the ways nature and nurture weave the fabric of one woman's life, and renders a portrait of one man left in its tragic wake.

“Harrington begins with a fascinating premise and develops it fully. In addition, Tom and his wife Jane emerge as compelling, complexly developed individuals. This debut novel is as much a character study as a legal thriller.” — Booklist

“In a thriller world saturated with James Pattersons, John Grishams and Stephen Kings, this debut novel from Karen Harrington comes as a breath of fresh air. This story culminates in a finish that will rattle your genes.” – New Mystery Reader

Karen Harrington is a Texas native who has been writing fiction for more than twenty years. Her writing has received honors from the Hemingway Short Story Festival, the Texas Film Institute Screenplay Contest and the Writers’ Digest National Script Contest. A graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas, she has worked as a speechwriter and editor for major corporations and non-profit organizations. She authored and published There’s a Dog in the Doorway, a children’s book created expressly for the Dr. Laura Schlessinger Foundation’s “My Stuff Bags.” My Stuff bags go to children in need who must leave their home due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. She lives in Plano, Texas, with her husband and two children.

And a message from a Pulpwood Queen favorite author, Stephanie Bond!

Hello!

I hope you’re having a fantastic summer! I wanted to let you know that TUESDAY, July 29 is the official release date for the third Body Movers book, 3 MEN AND A BODY!

In book 3, Carlotta accepts Cooper’s invitation to go on a road trip for a VIP body pickup, but when they arrive at their destination, three different men lay claim to the celebutante’s body—and someone seems determined they won’t make it back to Atlanta with their cargo intact! Intrigue and laughs abound in this sexy mystery series set in Atlanta. 3 MEN AND A BODY received 4 ½ stars (fantastic—a keeper) from Romantic Times Book Review:

"Fast paced and wickedly humorous story that skewers fame
and celebrity obsession with deadly accuracy."

My first grade teacher, Miss Alice Sue DeHart, kindly gave me a quote for the front cover:

“I knew murder was in that girl’s future!” –Stephanie’s first grade teacher

(Thank you, Miss DeHart!)

If you’re following the Body Movers series, I hope you’ll consider buying 3 MEN AND A BODY for a few hours of entertainment!

ACCK! BODY MOVERS 1…more inventory coming soon!

My publisher was caught off guard with a recent surge in demand for book 1 and they ran out of stock! But book 1 is going back to print in mass market (small) paperback and should be available again within a few weeks.

eBooks anyone?

All 3 of the Body Movers books are available in various eBook formats; check with your favorite eBook provider!

Or do you prefer audio books?

3 Men and a Body is now available unabridged (word for word) from Books on Tape on CDs and in downloadable audio formats for your MP3 player! Check the BooksonTape website or ask your local library to order a copy. Audio versions of Body Movers, and 2 Bodies for the Price of 1 coming soon (Books on Tape wanted to get the most current book in the series out there first)!

Release Dates

Here’s a glimpse of my upcoming release dates for the rest of 2008:

Tuesday, Sep 30 Watch and Learn, Book 1 in the Sex for Beginners trilogy,
Harlequin Blaze (available for pre-order at online bookstores now!)

Tuesday, Oct 28 In a Bind, Book 2 in the Sex for Beginners trilogy, Harlequin
Blaze

Under the Mistletoe, gift-size hardcover featuring a
holiday story by Linda Howard and a reprint of my Christmas
novel Naughty or Nice?, HQN Books

Tuesday, Nov 25 No Peeking... Book 3 in the Sex for Beginners trilogy, Harlequin Blaze

Until next time…

Please keep checking my StephanieBond.com website for updates, including covers and excerpts. If you’re looking for something to read during your coffee break, check out the Open Book journal on my site, which I update several times a week. (By the way, I never include images or direct links in my emails like this one so that your spam filter doesn’t eat my notes!) You’ll find lots of extras on my website, including a monthly contest, a page for printing your own bookmarks, and a page dedicated to the Body Movers series.

By the way, I love hearing your feedback on the Body Movers series, so feel free to email me!

As always, I encourage you to support your local bookseller. Between the reality of bookstores trimming their inventory and the fact that my Body Movers books are considered hybrids and might be shelved in the general fiction section, the mystery section, the romance section, or on the New Releases table in the front of the store, if you don’t see my books in your bookstore, please ASK someone! And remember that most booksellers can order any book they don’t have in inventory, usually at no extra charge. But if you’re an online shopper or if you live in a remote area, my books are also available new at all Internet bookstores (Amazon, B&N, Borders, Books-a-Million, Overstock, WalMart, and eHarlequin). As always, thanks so much for your support! And special thanks to those of you who are spreading the word of the Body Movers books to your reading friends!

Happy reading!

The Pulpwood Queens Book Now Available in LARGE PRINT

Dear Readers!

Yesterday I received my very first copy of the hardback Large Print of my book, "The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life", Thorndike Publishing. Check with your local independent bookstore or bookstore but you can order online from any of the major online booksellers, such as, www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com.

Excited because now for those of us visually challenged, we, and notice, I said, we, can read my book!

I also received our book of the month, "Where the River Ends" by Charles Martin and buy your tickets now, as we are almost full for our boat ride down the bayou here in Jefferson with Charles Martin on board. Tickets are $6.00 and you can book your ride by calling 903-665-7520.

I still have a few signed copies of author, Doug Crandell's books, "The Flawless Skin of Ugly People" and "Hairdos of the Mildly Depressed" left from his visit here for his book launch! Photos are from the event with Doug Crandell who was absolutely charming and highly entertaining as an author. We didn't leave the shop until almost ten o'clock. We have had the best authors visit this summer for sure!

Please remember also to review all the Pulpwood Queen authors books at the online booksellers websites. First, this establishes our Pulpwood Queen presence and selections on those sites. Second, publishers do check out our comments on the books we read. This can really help an undiscovered author get discovered in a big way which is our mission.

If you have not reviewed my book, "The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life", please do. This will enter your name into a drawing September 1, 2008 for a complimentary Pulpwood Queen VIP Pass to all events at our annual Author Extravaganza: Girlfriend Weekend, the third weekend in January 2009. Also if you buy your packages now, you get an Early Bird Special of $150.00 which is a deal. At the door it will be $350 for all events and if you win in the drawing, that fee will be refunded to you.

Happy Summer Reading and do know I am severely handicapped right now, as my laptop crashed and working with the family computer at home which runs on a language I barely understand, ha ha ha! Hope to be back in the know next week.

Fan Mail to the Pulpwood Queen and more

Dear Readers,

Please enjoy the following letters from authors and attendees of Author! Author! Book Festival in Shreveport and from the reairing of a feature on Bob Phillips, The Texas Country Reporter television show. I am always amazed and thrilled that others are embracing our passion to promote literacy and comment. Both, truly a wonderful events, so enjoy the kind words.

Next up, tonight is the Book Launch Party for Doug Crandell's "Hairdo's of the Mildly Depressed," Virgin Books. Previous posts have all the details of event. Hope to see you there and I'll get you all caught up on the rest of the summer events and to prepare you for a tremendous reading fall.

Last a great website I found below. Check it out for all who are as interested in collected fine books as I am.

The “Why” of Book Collecting

Often, collectors see beauty and art in their books beyond just the words contained within them. For me, it’s the smell of an old book, the firm and delicate feel of its binding in my hands as I carefully turn the pages, ...

On home computer for awhile as my computer crashed. If you sent me a email before this weekend that I have not answered, please resend. My life is on that computer and can't access anything. I hope to have it either fixed in the next couple of weeks or it's time to buy a new one, YIKES! Lord knows what I'll do in the meantime without my laptop but as always, hang with me.

P.S. Also posted more photos of Author! Author! Book Festival sent to me by Heather Lee of her daughter, Carmen with Dominque Looney, daughter of Pulpwood Queen Wendy Looney. Great to have them as I missed getting a picture of my favorite book character, Curious George, who was in attendance ALL DAY!

First of all, let me say, I can't put your book down! I bought it yesterday at Author! Author! at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium and am already halfway through it! It's so very inspiring! I'd hoped to meet you, but you were away when I went to your booth. :(
I was wondering if you could tell me if there's a Pulpwood Queens chapter in Shreveport/Bossier. I would love to be a part of it, if so!
I'm sending your book to my mother as soon as I finish it; she's always been an avid reader, and had me reading long before grade school, and I'm sure she'll love it! Actually, on that note, is there a Pulpwood Queens chapter in the Baton Rouge area? I'm certain she'd love to get involved as well!
Thank you so much for your vision and your book! You truly are an inspiration!

Kathy,
I just saw your interview on The Texas County Reporter and what an inspiration you are! I love your attitude and you really drive it home that we should live our lives to the fullest and have fun! Life is too short to get bogged down in the mundane.
Thanks for making me smile and make me think....
Janet

Hello Kathy,

Thank you for the gift of your book. I enjoyed it and your energy a lot. You embrace life and all those you meet with such high speed and love. It was delightful to read about your exploits.

Just curious about your mother... Is she still alive? I'm wondering if she is going to read your book.

My mother told me that books are my friends, and I have always believed her. Although I don't think I'm a very good friend to a book as I can easily devour one in a day. I tend to hold onto people for a little longer than that!

I have a gift for you too. Please enjoy.

God bless ,

Julie.

The Circle Of Life

Happy Birthday my child.

Let me introduce myself.

For the five years of your life I will be your haven.

As you grow and learn about yourself and your world

I will be holding your heart with my hand.

With all your "firsts" I will encourage and celebrate with you.

I am your number one fan.

You can call me Momma.

For the next five years we will grow academically together.

Forgotten mathematic theories will resurface in our struggle for you to excel.

Schoolyard squabbles will be overcome with your head on my shoulder.

We will embrace your future together.

I am your number one fan.

You will call me Mom.

The tumultuous teenage years will see our relationship sifted like flour.

We will come through the process refined and intact.

I will still be your number one fan .. you will not me mine.

And you will now call me Mother.

The adult years are the great equalizer.

We will grow apart, but forever be entwined.

You will conquer the world, be the brightest shining star and plan for tomorrow.

You will face your finest hour and become strong.

The family you start will be a blessing for us.

Still I remain your number one fan.

You will call me ... whenever you get the time.

As time passes you will become greater and I will weaken.

You will become my haven.

As I slow down and my world becomes smaller, I will be holding your heart with mine.

With all my "lasts" you will be brave, preparing to stand alone.

For all eternity I will be your number one fan.

You will call me with your heart.

...you will call me Momma.

Happy Birthday child of mine.

I love you with all my life.

Kathy - I was wondering if you could tell me who to contact in Shreveport about joining the shreveport chapter of the Pulpwood Queens book club. I enjoyed your talk very much at Author, Author on saturday. Thank you for your help. Margie Hodges

Hey Kathy,
It was so great to finally reconnect with you this weekend and to see the amazing success you've had with your own book and your Pulpwood Queens Book Club. Every time I hear someone mention your name or the Pulpwood Queens, it brings such a smile to face. I love that you are keeping the written word alive and well, championing us underdog novelists, writers & humorists, and proving to the world that the "midlist" author IS alive, well, and definitely worthy of a read! You definitely deserve big snaps and an "Amen Sista" for that!
And thank you so much for your kind words about my novel Excess Baggage in your blog. It's been a crazy uphill climb to get this book out there and to prove its worth. I truly appreciate your support in helping it find a readership. As I told you, I have donated a portion of my royalties to the United Ostomy Associations of America 30+ Network, which provides a network of support for people thirty years of age and older with ostomies and other intestinal and/or urinary diversions by assisting them in leading full and productive lives without limitation. It is my hope that this novel will help bring ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and ostomy awareness to the forefront of discussion, debate, and perception much like the pink ribbon campaign did to finally bring about breast cancer awareness back in 1993.
Everyone I've run into lately has told me they or someone they love has been affected by this disease. At the annual UOAA Conference last year, over 500 people attended and they are expecting well over 600 attendees next year at the Conference in New Orleans. Over 1.4 million Americans suffer from this family of diseases or has or had an ostomy. Tony Snow, who just passed away last week from colon cancer, by the way, had an ostomy, but he was too embarrassed to talk about it publicly as I understand. No one really wants to come forward yet its a growing problem. So it's amazing to me that a publisher would ignore such numbers of potential readers because they don't know how to market such a novel. But I guess you hear that story a lot from authors. That is why I decided that I couldn't wait any longer to shop the novel around and self publishing became my only option. So I truly appreciate your courage and assistance in helping Excess Baggage finally find an audience.
I can't wait for the boat cruise next month and I especially can't wait for the Girlfriend's Weekend. Anything with you, I know will be an absolute blast!
You look and are fabulous as ever. The tiara definitely suits you as you are truly are a "Queen!"
Again, thanks and congrats on the success of The Pulpwood Queens. Can't wait to join ya'll! Keep up the great work and fun.
Tracy
XOXO :*

Kia Ora Kathy (thats New Zealand for Howdy )

"......now on to my next book on promoting literacy!"

.... does this mean you are writing another book? Hope so. I enjoyed your style.

Cheers .... Julie.

Kathy,

I read your book today. Nope, I devoured your book today. Yes. That's better.

I have notes in so many of the margins. It is more fully decorated than my eighth grade
composition when I was mooning over Louis Grady. Today Louis is missing several important
front teeth and fallen way short of many of my high expectations. Thank you Lord for unanswered prayers...

Your mom...I got in on the tail end of a conversation with you this weekend about a lady
who thought you did your family an injustice in the book. It's my guess that the conversation
was about your mama. I, however, thought you handled the whole subject of your mama
with honesty and grace, recognizing her strengths and weaknesses with an even hand, there
was nothing mean-spirited about it.

pg178-- Funeral hair...oh, how I enjoyed Joyce. I wish I had known her. Kudos to you for
sucking it up and being her friend 'til the end. That section told me a lot about your heart.

pg188- The Sears catalog! LOL! Loved the whole conversation. I, too, awaited its arrival like
some wait on Christmas morning. I read this section and thought, "Oh, my! I just betcha
Kathy wore ponchos, too!!!" I once had one with tremendous fringe. I wore it proudly, just knowing
that when people saw me in it they recognized me as the Regal Indian Princess I knew I was!

Hmmm....where is my note on my favorite quote? I can't find it, but you used it. Just recently
I mentioned it in my live radio show, asking my board op if he had dreamed his six impossible
things. The poor young man (twentyish) had no clue what I was speaking about-- I bowed my head and
grieved for his dear soul. :)))))

I've bored you, I'm sure. I will wrap this up with my favorite Kathy observation. Your parents are
responsible for your childhood, your present and future are up to you. (Forgive the loose translation--
I can't find that note either.)

I am writing my publicist now. As Scarlet would say, "As God as my witness, I must go to Jefferson."

Hugs,
Shellie

Ms. Patrick:

Carmen and I are so blessed! This past weekend was somewhat of a surreal experience for us, so far from our norm. We are honored to have met you, Ms. Wendy, and the charming, young Dominque.

Many thanks for posting the beautiful pics of Dominque and Carmen on your site. By the way, two enthusiastic thumbs up for your Pulpwood sisterhood! I was not aware of your book society or the accolades which trail behind you. I am honored to know you. Thank you for sharing the information with me about the chapter near Lake Charles in Sulphur.

Carmen and I are new to this awe inspiring world of publication. Her book has taken flight resulting from my undying promise to her when she was in the first grade to see her work published. Once Carmen's school and the city heard about the book, things exploded in a wonderful way; however, aside from my experience with freelance work, this is all new territory for us. Our books were released this past calendar year, and we are not so acclimated to this new world opening in front of us.

I must add that having Dominque in Shreveport helped make this event even more enjoyable for Carmen. She was not expecting to find a new friend at the festival and was concerned that she might not have anyone her age to converse with there.

Attached are a few pictures for Ms. Wendy and you, and I do hope that technology is friendly with me this evening. It isn't often that I gracefully embrace the technological world. The pictures are lovely. Dominque is quite photogenic! A young Pulpwood Queen in training, I imagine.

Congratulations on the success of your work. God's blessings to you especially with the upcoming Books Alive, Texas Book Festival, and Author Extravaganza events. Perhaps our paths will cross again in the future-I hope so.

Many thanks to Dominque and Ms. Wendy. Dominque is a wonderful young lady with exquisite manners. It was nice to spend time with her. Carmen relishes the artwork she made for her in her favorite color imaginable-purple.

Ms. Patrick, I want to thank you for making Carmen and me feel so welcome this past weekend. You helped break the ice, and I greatly appreciate your warm hospitality.

Thank you, and please let me know if I can ever be of service to you! May God continue to bless your kind soul.

In Christ's Peace,

Heather R. Lee

whats new AUTHOR AUTHOR! whats new

I've just returned from the Author Author! event in Shreveport, Louisiana. It was a first year event put on by dedicated volunteers. I enjoyed meeting all the nice people that attended. It was held at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium on Elvis Presley Avenue. The Louisiana Hayride used to broadcast from there and they say the building is haunted by the ghosts of some of the performers. Which explains why I thought I saw a glimpse of Elvis and Hank Williams.

My mom went with me and, as usual, I put her to work. Thanks Mom! It was nice to see my good friend, Pulpwood Queen Kathy Patrick, Jacques Couvillon, Margaret McManis, Judy Pace Christie, and more.

I had the great privilege of being assigned to host Debby Macy. Debby is a librarian at Herndon School in Caddo Parish. She made sure I had the technology for my presentation. And talk about going beyond the call of duty--Debby made drapes for the windows so the audience could see my presentation without the glare of light interfering. That's us standing in front of them in the picture above.

The other picture, from left to right: Tracy Carnes, Brenda Willis(my mom), Kathy Patrick and me.

All in all, a good day.

Author! Author! Book Festival in Shreveport!

Dear Readers,
Just back from Author! Author! Book Festival in Shreveport, Louisiana held at the wonderful historic Municipal Auditorium. Looks like The Friends of the Municipal Auditorium are off to a great start as all the authors I met were incredible. Of course, I had a great time catching up with my good friend and author, Kimberly Willis Holt, who to me writes the best children's books in the world. Her mother, Brenda, was also in attendance so we had some time to talk and share each other's lives.

Local and State News

Author! Author! event draws literary fans

Ramon Romero (left) and Rosario Maria Riel-Romero, browse through books during the Author Author event at Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport on Saturday afternoon. Val Horvath/The Times

Publishers, book authors and their fans came in droves on Saturday at the Municipal Auditorium for the first Author! Author! Book Fair. More

Pulpwood Queen authors, Carolyn Jourdan, Jacques Couvillon, Rickey Pittman, and fellow Jeffersonian author, Mitchel Whittington were also in attendance, as well as, The Pulpwood Queen Book Club members from Shreveport, Henderson, Marshall, and Jefferson, Texas. For all Pulpwood Queens in the Ark.La.Tex, be sure and mark your calendars for the third weekend in July as the event was stellar. They are already in the planning stages for next year's event.

I also got to reconnect with some old friends like Lynn who was the buyer at Barron's Books when I first joined their staff, another seems like, lifetime ago. Eight years ago I met author, Tracy Carnes when she was in the first draft of her book now just published, "Excess Baggage" which is incredible. She will be coming and featured during our Girlfriend Weekend. Shellie Rushing Tomlinson, author of "Suck Your Stomach In and Put Some Color On: What Southern Mamas Tell Their Daughters That the Rest of Y'all Should Know Too", was a real treat to meet and FUNNY! Y'all she is joining Susan Reinholdt, River Jordan, and I for our version of Jeff Foxworthy's Blue Collar Tour, which we are calling our PINK COLLAR TOUR (with rhinestones) as the Friday Night entertainment of Girlfriend Weekend. Get ready as this event will be a scream!

One of the things that impressed me at the event the most was how many things they had planned especially for children focusing on books and literacy. Pulpwood Queen Wendy Looney came with me and her 9 year old Dominque. Dominque was entertained all day with book related activities, author events, a clown who was an expert at balloon animals, and even Curious George in person. She had a blast as Wendy and I sat at my table talking to booklovers. This is one book festival that is geared for families, so bring the kids, grandkids and come on! Author! Author! was a great day for books!

Now enjoy the photos of some of the authors and people I met at the festival. I also had the opportunity to line up some more great authors for Books Alive now to be held the second weekend in November in Jefferson as the first weekend, I have been invited to the Texas Book Festival. Also I invited some other great authors to our Author Extravaganza; Girlfriend Weekend held the third weekend in January 2009. Four people paid for their Pulpwood Queen VIP Packages at the festival , (see Lindsey above from our Henderson chapter writing her check),and remember the first 75 to get their money in will also receive FREE BOOKS!

Last, my daughter Madeleine Patrick and I headed over to Longview, Texas to for the second Lifewriting Class I am teaching at Newgate Mission. I have posted photos of all the attendees of this class and can tell you I have never, and I mean never, experienced people more enthusiastic about writing and telling their stories. This is one of the most rewarding literacy ventures I have ever pursued. My daughter, after the class, begged me to take her next time. I think she enjoyed the class more than I did. The Pulpwood Queens not only talk the talk, my friends, we walk the walk. Won't you join us on our literary journey.

The Longview News Journal was in attendance so be reading the paper as they are doing a feature with photographs.

More to come so stay tuned daily. As always, The Pulpwood Queen has a lot to say when it comes to literacy!

P.S. Yesterday, as Wendy and I were driving to Mike Weber's gallery exhibit, I got a call from the 87 year old mother-in-law of former Senator Frank Gaines in my homestate, Kansas. She live s in Salina, Kansas and she told me she read my book the night before cover to cover. She just loved it! Then she went on to tell me her daughter, Beverly, the Senator's wife has cancer. This is where I got choked up as she got choked up. She went on to tell me, now obviously crying, that my book helped her so much. She just wanted me to know that my book was so inspirational to her.
You know critics can write what they may about my book but when an 87 year old woman takes the time to call me and tell me how much my book meant to her, well I hope to shout! Folks, that's all I need to know that I am on the right track. I always said if my book could make a difference for just one person. Well, it did so I can die a happy woman.
Now let's pray for both Beverly, her mother, Veda, and the Senator who has also been dealing with cancer. Life is about relationships my dear friends and whether this woman ever knows it or not, she validated everything I ever stand for. God Bless Veda and her family now let's get to reading!
