Three things
This entire blog post is just to talk about three things.
Thing one: Kathy Patrick
There are very few who can turn an average Sunday afternoon into something inspiring, hilarious and unforgettable. Texas’s own Kathy Patrick, on tour to promote her memoir The Pulpwood Queens’ Tiara-Wearing, Book-Sharing Guide To Life, did just that this past Sunday at Wordsmiths.
We ran a three-part interview with Kathy here in the blog, but nothing could compare with the warmth and humor Kathy’s presence, along with her touring Pulpwood Queen friends, brought to the store.

This is all of us on the Wordsmiths staff that day, with the Pulpwood Queen herself.
Thing two:BGB Vol I
Our friend Tim, formerly DJ Cayenne, the virtual proprietor over at BabyGotBooks, has been making the ‘net rounds to talk about BGB Vol I, the reading series we’re kicking off here at Wordsmiths Books on Jan 23rd with Rob Sheffield and The Swear.

He’s penned a guest note for Cable And Tweed, one of my favorite Atlanta-based music blogs. After reading that, I realize that Tim should really have my job-he’s incredibly persuasive and a lot less wordy than I am.
Thing three: Celine Dion
No, really. For some reason, the past few months have been strangely, weirdly Celine Dion focused. I blame the copy of Let’s Talk About Love by Carl Wilson, the newest entry into the awesome 33 1/3 series of texts by Continuum Books (each one tackles a specific, beloved album and dissects it into brainy, wonderful minutiae). See, for the brief time I lived in Las Vegas, her “A New Day” stage show was, essentially, the only “Vegas spectacular” I ever took in-it was schmaltzy, it was overblown, and it was fan-freaking-tastic.
To celebrate said book, Toronto’s This Is Not A Reading Series (see, speaking of reading series’ we’re aspiring to be) had a book party featuring the author and Canada’s own Owen “Final Fantasy” Pallett. When he was at Wordsmiths he brought out his subtle cover of Joanna Newsom’s “Peach, Plum, Pear” but for this night Owen chose a more appropriate cover. See below, and be stunned in awe
This makes me think two things.
A) Owen can cover anything and make it heartbreaking.
B) We need to invest in some video equipment for the 23rd.
